Scripture: Colossians 3:23 – "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." I want to talk to you today as someone who believes deeply in the sacred calling of the business world. You may wear a suit or steel-toe boots. You might crunch numbers, write contracts, or build homes. But never forget—your workplace is a pulpit, and your business is a ministry. Let me tell you about John, a Christian business owner in our city who runs an auto repair shop. For years, he thought his faith was for Sunday and his work was for Monday. But one day, he hired a young mechanic fresh out of prison. The other shops wouldn’t take the risk, but John said, “If God gave me a second chance, I can extend one too.” That mechanic not only found work—he found Christ through John’s mentorship.
That’s marketplace ministry. You see, the marketplace isn't just where goods are exchanged—it's where lives intersect, where souls are reached, and where the love of Christ can be demonstrated in the everyday. Jesus spent more time in the marketplace than in the synagogue. He called fishermen at the dock, healed in the streets, and told stories about farmers, merchants, and shepherds. Why? Because the marketplace was where the people were. Your business is not separate from your faith—it is an expression of it. When you treat your employees with grace and fairness, you preach a sermon. When you go the extra mile for a customer, you're showing the Gospel in action. When you resist cutting corners or inflating invoices, you become a light in an often dark world. Let me share another story. Sarah, a boutique owner in our congregation, decided to start a prayer jar at her checkout counter. It wasn’t flashy. Just a simple sign: “Need prayer? Drop a note.” Within weeks, she had to bring a bigger jar. And now? She prays over dozens of people every week—and some have come into the store just to ask for prayer. Not to shop. Just for prayer. That’s marketplace ministry. You don’t need a collar to preach or a pulpit to minister. You just need to see your daily work through a Kingdom lens. You are an ambassador of Heaven in boardrooms, breakrooms, and back alleys. Let me challenge you with three things:
So, business owner, keep building. Keep innovating. Keep serving. But above all—keep ministering. Because in the Kingdom, your work is your worship. Prayer: Lord, thank You for the privilege of partnering with You in the marketplace. Help me to see my business as more than a job—it is a ministry. Give me boldness to be a light, compassion to reach people, and wisdom to steward this calling well. Use my hands to serve, my heart to love, and my influence to glorify You. Amen.
